Shoulder Pain Chiropractors in Edinburgh

An experienced chiropractor can relieve shoulder pain by addressing restrictions in joint movement, muscle imbalances, and nerve irritation. Our chiropractors use gentle, targeted adjustments and mobilisation techniques to restore function and reduce discomfort in the shoulder and surrounding areas.

We also have a team of experienced massage therapists that work closely with our chiropractors, they work to address any remaining issues with the surrounding connective tissues to further restore joint function.

Shoulder Pain Treatment

The shoulder girdle is a highly complex structure in the body, consisting of three bones- the scapula, clavicle (collar bone), and humerus (upper arm bone)- that form four key joints: the acromioclavicular, glenohumeral, sternoclavicular, and scapulothoracic. Surrounding these joints are connective tissues, including ligaments, tendons and muscles, which work together to stabilise the shoulder and facilitate arm movement. Due to the complexity of this joint, shoulder discomfort can have multiple causes, and in many cases the pain originates from the neck or upper back rather than the shoulder itself.

Shoulder pain may present as:

  • Stiffness or restricted movement (frozen shoulder).

  • Sharp or aching pain in the shoulder, arm, or upper back.

  • Pain on lifting or moving your arm.

  • Numbness or tingling sensations.

  • Weakness when lifting or rotating the arm.

Because shoulder pain is often linked to dysfunction in the neck or upper back, our approach considers the entire musculoskeletal system to identify and address the root cause of discomfort.

What To Expect

At your first appointment, our chiropractors will carry out a thorough assessment, which may include:

  • A discussion of your symptoms and full medical history

  • An in depth physical examination to assess posture, joint mobility, and muscle function

  • Diagnostic tests, if necessary, to determine the underlying cause of your pain

  • Radiographs (X-rays) if clinically justified.

Based on this assessment, we will create a personalised treatment plan that may include:

  • Gonstead Chiropractic Adjustments: Gentle spinal and joint adjustments to improve mobility and reduce nerve irritation.

  • Extremity adjustments : Specific adjustments to restore function back to the shoulder joints.

  • Soft Tissue Therapy: Targeted techniques to release muscle tension and support healing.

  • Rehabilitation Exercises: Strengthening and mobility exercises to improve joint stability and function.

  • Postural & Lifestyle Advice: Guidance on maintaining good posture and movement habits to aid recovery.
